From farm to table: How Kuipers Breeders closes the loop on sustainability through CSR donation program
At Kuipers Breeders, our core business is simple: we hatch and sell premium day-old chicks to farmers across Ghana. But a sustainable business cannot operate in isolation. True sustainability means looking at our entire lifecycle and finding ways to reduce our environmental impact while actively uplifting the local community. This philosophy, initiated by Jurjën Kuipers, our Managing Director, recently led us to launch a structured CSR donation program.
Maximizing every stage of the lifecycle
As a dedicated breeder and supplier of day-old chicks, raising and caring for parent stock is a vital part of our operations. When these birds eventually pass their "point of lay," they remain an excellent source of high-quality protein.
Rather than viewing this transition through a purely commercial lens, we saw a unique opportunity to create meaningful social value. We asked ourselves: How can we leverage this high-quality protein to support vulnerable communities and advance our mission of a sustainable poultry value chain?
Connecting the dots
Under the mandate of Moses Aidoo, our General Manager, we redirected these resources to institutions that care for vulnerable children and youth across the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions:
- Ashanti School for the Deaf (Gyamase): Honoring a 10-year relationship that sparked this initiative, providing essential nutrition to support student health and their self-sufficient farming operations.
- Accra Psychiatric Hospital (Adabraka): Supporting the dietary and nutritional needs of patients receiving mental health care.
- ThinkAbility Foundation (Dawhenya): Providing essential protein to children at their autism center and children’s home.
- Rising Star Home (Dodowa): Nourishing young people in need of a safe, supportive environment.
- Center for Learning and Childhood Development (Ashaley Botwe): Fueling children and fathers who receive free physical, occupational, and speech therapy services for Cerebral Palsy (CP) at clinics in Achimota and Weija.
Beyond the farm
When we established our hatchery in Ghana, our goal was to reduce the environmental footprint of importing livestock while anchoring ourselves in the local economy. This donation program is a natural extension of that promise. By supporting school feeding initiatives and youth-centric organizations, we are actively investing in the health and potential of Ghana's next generation.
This initiative is a core part of how Kuipers Breeders aligns its local operations with global standards for sustainable development. This donation program directly advances two key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 2: Zero Hunger — By delivering essential, high-quality lean protein to children’s homes, therapy clinics, and hospitals, we are directly improving nutritional security for vulnerable populations.
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production — We practice responsible lifecycle management. Instead of allowing livestock at the end of their laying cycle to become an underutilized resource, we ensure 100% resource utilization within a circular economy framework.
Turning the poultry lifecycle transition into a source of vital nutrition for our community was an operational win. But more than that, it was a chance to uplift vulnerable communities and empower local care institutions.
